About our blog

Join the conversation … sharing knowledge, new approaches and solutions…

As U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said recently, “Together we face a crucial challenge in figuring out how we will feed a growing global population in a sustainable way.” This blog provides an opportunity for Midwestern farmers, extension specialists  and others to interact with Sustainablecorn* and U2U** project scientists and farmers and each other to share knowledge, new approaches and solutions.

Sustainablecorn project farmers and scientists are examining Midwest cropping systems to document farm management practices that increase crop resilience in response to increasingly more erratic and extreme weather events, while reducing negative environmental impacts and maintaining farm profits. The U2U team is improving climate information for Corn Belt farmers and advisors by developing and disseminating usable decision support tools, resource materials and training.

Blog topics include extended rotations, tillage management, cover crops, drainage water management, integrated pest management, decision support tools, weather and agriculture and nitrogen management in corn-based cropping systems.

All blog visitors are encouraged to contribute constructively to this public conversation.

*Sustainablecorn refers to the Climate and Corn-based Cropping System Coordinated Agricultural Project, USDA-NIFA Award No. 2011-68002-30190; a collaborative research project spanning 9 states, 10 land grant universities and a USDA Agricultural Research Laboratory. **Useful to Usable (U2U) is a multi-institution research and extension project focused on developing climate-based decision resources to support Corn Belt agriculture. Funding for U2U is provided by USDA-NIFA, Award No. 2011-68002-30220. You can learn more about U2U at: AgClimate4U.org.

    1. We are involved in this issue not only as farmers, but also by started a group in 2012 call “Soil Organic Matter Generators” or S.O.M. Generators. We do presentations as training for the NRCS/SWCD’s, Local Watersheds, and other Ag related businesses. We recently had the Heirs and Foundation boards of the McKnight Foundation and the Sam Walton Foundation learning about Soil Regeneration and Cover Crops. We have agreed to participate in a 7 state study by U of Purdue based CTIC. We are also hoping to write a book starting this Winter titled SOIL REGENERATION “Growing Your Soil”
